EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Vibrant Triumvirate of Periwinkles and Wall Navelwort: An Exquisite Botanical Triptych from Culpeper's English Family Physician This handcolored botanical copperplate engraving, hailing from the esteemed medical text "Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal," showcases the intricate details of three fascinating plants: Small Periwinkle (Vinca minor), Great Periwinkle (Vinca major), and Wall Navelwort (Tetragonia tetragonioides). The Small Periwinkle, depicted on the left, is a low-growing, creeping plant with heart-shaped leaves and blue or purple flowers. Traditionally used for various ailments, including epilepsy, Small Periwinkle was also believed to have protective properties against evil spirits and witches. In the center, the Great Periwinkle unfurls its grandeur with larger, glossy leaves and larger, funnel-shaped, white flowers. This plant, also known as Common Periwinkle or Myrtle, was employed for a myriad of medicinal purposes, including the treatment of wounds, ulcers, and gastrointestinal issues. On the right, the Wall Navelwort, with its distinctive tetragonal shape, displays its tiny, white flowers, which bloom in clusters. This trailing plant was utilized for its edible leaves and seeds, as well as for medicinal purposes, such as treating wounds and promoting digestion. This exquisite triptych, produced by the skilled hands of engraver Joshua Hamilton and published by W. Locke in London in 1792, offers a glimpse into the rich history of botanical exploration and herbal medicine. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and meticulous attention to detail showcase the beauty and complexity of these plants, inviting us to appreciate their unique characteristics and the knowledge they have imparted throughout history.
