Skull and Crossbones

The Jolly Roger is the name given to any of various flags flown to identify a ships crew as pirates. The flag most usually identified as the Jolly Roger today is the skull and crossbones, being a flag consisting of a skull above two long bones set in an x-mark arrangement. This design was used by four pirates, captains Edward England, John Taylor, Sam Bellamy and John Martel.Despite its appearance in popular culture, plain black flags were often employed by most pirates in the 17th-18th century. Historically, the flag was flown to frighten pirates victims into surrendering without a fight, since it conveyed the message that the attackers were outlaws who would not consider themselves bound by the usual rules of engagement and might, therefore, slaughter those they defeated. EDITORS COMMENTS

This haunting image depicts the infamous Skull and Crossbones flag, also known as the Jolly Roger. Contrary to popular belief, this symbol of piracy was not the most commonly used flag among pirate crews during the 17th and 18th centuries. Instead, plain black flags were more frequently hoisted to strike fear into the hearts of potential victims. The Skull and Crossbones flag, consisting of a skull above two long bones arranged in an x-mark, was the emblem of only a few notorious pirate captains, including Edward England, John Taylor, Sam Bellamy, and John Martel. Historically, this ominous flag was flown to intimidate victims into surrendering without a fight. The skull and crossbones conveyed the message that the attacking pirates were outlaws who would not abide by the usual rules of engagement. This could mean that those they defeated would be mercilessly slaughtered. The image of the skull and crossbones is a chilling reminder of the fear and terror that piracy inflicted upon the high seas. The anatomy of the skull, with its hollow eye sockets and gaping jaw, adds to the overall sense of doom and death. The long bones, or femurs, crossing beneath the skull, further emphasize the ominous nature of this symbol. Despite its fearsome appearance, the Jolly Roger flag is a significant part of maritime history. It represents the lawlessness and criminal activity that once thrived on the open sea. Today, it continues to be a symbol of piracy and adventure, inspiring both fear and fascination in equal measure.
