EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594): A 16th Century English Seafarer and Navigator, as Depicted in a 19th Century Colored Engraving Sir Martin Frobisher, an English seaman and explorer, is depicted in this striking 19th century colored engraving. Born in 1535 in Wiltshire, England, Frobisher rose to prominence during the Age of Discovery, playing a significant role in the exploration and colonization of the New World. Frobisher's image, captured here in meticulous detail, shows him as a man of great stature and authority, clad in full armor. His goatee beard and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and experience. The intricate design of his armor, with its geometric patterns and ornate decorations, reflects the grandeur and sophistication of the European courtly culture of the time. Frobisher's most notable achievement came in 1576 when he led an expedition to Frobisher Bay in present-day Nunavut, Canada. Believing he had discovered a new route to the East Indies, he returned to England with a small amount of iron ore, which he mistakenly believed was gold. This discovery, known as Frobisher's Gold, generated great excitement and led to further exploration and eventual colonization of the region. Despite this early setback, Frobisher continued to make important contributions to English maritime history. He played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and served as Lord Mayor of London in 1593. This 19th century engraving serves as a testament to Frobisher's enduring legacy as a brave and influential figure in the history of Britain and Europe.
