Born on October 27, 1819, Bazalgette is best known for his groundbreaking work on London's sewage and water supply systems. In the late 1850s, Bazalgette was appointed as the Chief Engineer for the Metropolitan Board of Works, where he embarked on an ambitious project to address London's dire sanitation issues. His vision led to the construction of an extensive network of sewers, which revolutionized public health in the city and significantly reduced the spread of cholera and other diseases. Bazalgette's engineering prowess extended beyond sanitation. He was also an accomplished inventor, holding numerous patents for various devices, including a hydraulic crane and a steam-powered dredger. His inventions contributed significantly to the development of the industrial sector and the construction industry. Sir Joseph Bazalgette was knighted in 1874 for his services to the public.
