EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of the Silver Jubilee Aldershot Military Tattoo in 1935, an annual military spectacle that has been enchanting audiences since 1894. Held at the Rushmoor Arena in Aldershot, this massive event was a reconstruction of a large-scale military demonstration, attracting crowds of up to half a million people in the 1920s and 1930s. The Aldershot Command Searchlight Tattoo, as it was then known, was a charitable event that raised funds for military charities. In this image, we see a demonstration of Physical Training and Club Swinging, showcasing the discipline and agility of the military personnel. The use of flame torches added to the spectacle and entertainment value of the event, making it a truly unique experience. The 1930s were a significant period for the Aldershot Military Tattoo, raising around 40,000 pounds annually. This photograph is a testament to the huge impact and influence the event had during that era, and continues to hold in British military history.
