EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the sleek and powerful form of English Electric Lightning T.4 XM989 as it taxis on the runway of RAF Wattisham in Suffolk, England, on 16th June 1963. Belonging to 56 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, XM989 is seen here in the company of other Lightning F.1As. The English Electric Lightning was a groundbreaking supersonic interceptor aircraft, designed and manufactured by the English Electric Company. It first entered service with the RAF in 1959 and quickly became a symbol of British aviation prowess. The T.4 variant, which is depicted in this image, was a two-seat trainer version used to train pilots in the complex handling characteristics of the Lightning. The year 1963 marked a significant period in the history of the Lightning, as it was during this time that the aircraft began to see extensive combat action in the Middle East, particularly during the Six-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. The versatile Lightning was also used for reconnaissance and ground-attack missions, demonstrating its versatility and adaptability. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the world of aviation during the early 1960s. The image captures the raw power and grace of the English Electric Lightning, as it readies itself for takeoff, ready to soar into the skies and defend the skies of the United Kingdom.
