EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the early days of World War I, the Serbian people rallied together to defend their homeland against the invading Austrian forces. In this evocative photograph, a group of Serbian reservists are seen marching determinedly through the streets of Belgrade, their faces set with resolve and their steps unwavering. At the outbreak of war in 1914, the Serbian army numbered only 195,000 men, but the country's full war strength was estimated to be around 320,000. With the Austrian bombardment of Belgrade underway, the call to arms was answered swiftly and decisively. The Balkan Peninsula had long been a powder keg of political and ethnic tensions, and the spark of war had ignited a conflagration that would engulf Europe for the next four years. As the first shots were fired and the lines of battle were drawn, the Serbian people knew that their fate and that of Europe hung in the balance. Despite the odds against them, the Serbian army would prove to be a formidable force on the battlefield. Their tenacity and resilience would earn them the respect of their allies and the admiration of the world. In this moment, however, all that mattered was the task at hand - to protect their homeland and defend their people against the invading Austrian forces. This photograph captures the spirit of the Serbian reservists as they answer the call to arms, their faces a testament to the courage and determination that would come to define the Serbian people during the First World War.
