EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of community engagement and determination during the tumultuous year of 1918, as Birchington residents came together for War Weapons Week. The image features Hannah Powell-Cotton, Commandant of the Birchington Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), selling War Certificates at a table. Flanking her are members of the Jack Hedge family: Jack himself, a masseur at the Quex Park VAD Hospital, and his wife, as they prepare to make their contribution. War Weapons Week was a nationwide initiative aimed at raising funds to purchase military weapons for the war effort. In Birchington, the ambitious goal was to procure an aeroplane, and the community rallied behind this cause. The event, which took place from May 23-25, 1918, ultimately raised over 10,000, an impressive achievement that speaks to the collective resolve and generosity of the townspeople. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, where Jack Hedge worked, was an essential part of the local response to the war. It opened on October 15, 1914, and remained in operation until January 31, 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, under the leadership of Hannah Powell-Cotton. Her husband, Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, played a crucial role as the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, ensuring the smooth transportation of patients from the stations to the hospitals. This photograph is an invaluable record of a pivotal moment in Birchington's history, encapsulating the spirit of unity, resilience, and hope that sustained the community during the challenging times of the First World War.
