EDITORS COMMENTS
Seiurus motacilla, commonly known as the Louisiana Waterthrush, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored aquatint plate from John James Audubon's "Birds of America." This exquisite illustration, part of the original double elephant folio published between 1827 and 130, was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Louisiana Waterthrush is a migratory bird that can be found in the eastern United States and Canada. It is a member of the family Helmitheros and the order Passeriformes, or perching birds. The bird is shown perched on a branch, its beak delicately holding a berry. The surrounding foliage includes various flowering plants, such as Brassicaceae, Araceae, and Arisaema. The background of the illustration showcases a diverse array of angiosperms, or flowering plants, including Eudicotyledons, Angiospermae, Cruciferae, Brassicales, and Arisinales. Some of the plants depicted include Brassica rapa, a type of turnip, and Alismatales, or water plants. The Louisiana Waterthrush is a bird of the order Aves, and its scientific name, Seiurus motacilla, reflects its taxonomic classification as a bird in the family Helmitheros and the genus Seiurus. The bird's name "motacilla" is derived from the Latin word for "mottled," referring to the bird's speckled plumage. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the intricate details of the Louisiana Waterthrush but also highlights the rich biodiversity of the plants and ecosystems that surround it. The hand-colored aquatint technique used by Audubon and Havell & Son captures the vibrant colors and textures of both the bird and its surroundings, making this a true masterpiece of natural history art.
