McCubbin, a member of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), which would later become the Royal Air Force (RAF), achieved a remarkable feat on 18 June 1916, when he brought down the aeroplane of the German air ace, Max Immelmann. Immelmann, a formidable opponent with an impressive score of 17 aerial victories, was a significant threat to the Allied forces. McCubbin, flying a BE2c two-seater reconnaissance aircraft, engaged Immelmann's Albatros D.II fighter in a dogfight over the Western Front. In the intense aerial combat, McCubbin managed to shoot down Immelmann's plane, marking a significant victory for the Allies.
