Blindfolded Cheesecloth Cloth Duncan Ectoplasm Ectoplasmic Fake Fraud Helen Investigation Materialisation Medium Mediumship Sance Seance Spirit Wrapped Paranormal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph captures the moment during a seance in May 1931, when Scottish medium Helen Duncan was blindfolded and surrounded by a veil of cheesecloth, with ectoplasm, believed to be materialized spirit substance, wrapped around her head and extending down to the floor. Duncan was renowned for her alleged ability to produce ectoplasm during her sances, a phenomenon that was widely debated and investigated by paranormal researchers and skeptics alike. Helen Duncan, born in 1897 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland, gained notoriety in the 1920s and 1930s for her mediumship, which included materializations, levitations, and other supernatural phenomena. However, her seances were not without controversy, as many believed that she and her accomplices used tricks and fraudulent methods to produce the ectoplasm. The investigation into Duncan's seances began in 1934 when she was accused of producing ectoplasm from her ear and using a sponge to create the appearance of materialization. The case gained widespread media attention, and in 1936, Duncan was put on trial for conspiracy and fraud. She was found guilty and sentenced to nine months in prison. Despite the controversy surrounding her, Duncan continued to practice mediumship after her release from prison, and her seances remained a subject of fascination for many. This photograph, taken during one of her earlier sances, provides a glimpse into the mysterious and intriguing world of mediumship and the paranormal beliefs of the time.
