EDITORS COMMENTS
Schuyler Colfax: A Prominent Figure in American Politics of the 19th Century This portrait captures Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885), an influential American statesman and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Colfax was born on January 13, 1823, in Lafayette, Indiana, and rose to prominence in the Whig Party during the mid-19th century. Colfax's political career began in earnest in 1852 when he was elected as a representative from Indiana to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in this capacity for 13 terms, becoming Speaker of the House in 1863, a position he held until 1869. During his tenure as Speaker, Colfax played a crucial role in passing several significant pieces of legislation, including the Revenue Act of 1864, which helped finance the Union war effort during the Civil War. Colfax was also a vocal advocate for the abolition of slavery and played a key role in the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson in 1868. After leaving the House, Colfax served as Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant from 1869 to 1873. Despite his many accomplishments, Colfax's political career was not without controversy. He was embroiled in several scandals, including the Credit Mobilier scandal, which involved the sale of Union Pacific Railroad stocks at inflated prices to congressmen. Despite these challenges, Colfax remained a respected and influential figure in American politics. He passed away on January 13, 1885, leaving behind a complex and fascinating legacy. This portrait, taken during his time as Speaker of the House, serves as a poignant reminder of his significant contributions to American history.
