Lateran Pilate Pontius Praetorium Sancta Scala Stairs Statues

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Scala Sancta, or Holy Stairs, are a sacred set of 28 marble steps located in Rome, Italy. These steps hold significant religious importance as they are believed to be the actual stairs that Jesus Christ climbed on his way to be tried by Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem during his Passion. The steps were brought to Rome by Emperor Constantine the Great in the 4th century AD and were originally located in the Lateran Palace. In this circa 1910 photograph, we see the Holy Stairs housed in a building that now incorporates part of the old Lateran Palace. The ornate staircase is surrounded by statues and intricate architectural details, adding to the sacred atmosphere. The steps are covered in a red carpet, a tradition that began in the 18th century as a sign of reverence and respect. The Scala Sancta are a popular pilgrimage site for Christians from all over the world. It is believed that touching the steps can bring forgiveness of sins and grant special graces. Pilgrims often make the journey on their knees as an act of penance and devotion. The history of the Holy Stairs is steeped in mystery and tradition, making them a fascinating and important part of Christian history and faith. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to the sacred site of the Holy Stairs in Rome.
