EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Roch, also known as Saint Rocco or Saint Rock, is depicted in this vibrant 14th-century colored engraving. Born in Montpellier, France, around 1348 (with some sources suggesting an earlier birth year of 1295 or 1327), Saint Roch is a Christian saint who is traditionally invoked for protection against the plague. The image shows Saint Roch in the garb of a pilgrim, with a pilgrim's staff in his hand and a dog at his feet. According to legend, Saint Roch was stricken with the plague while on a pilgrimage to Rome. Abandoned and left for dead, he was saved by a dog who brought him food and water. The dog is often depicted in images of the saint as a symbol of divine providence and companionship in times of suffering. The Colosseum in Rome can be seen in the background of the engraving, emphasizing the saint's connection to the city and his status as a pilgrim. Saint Roch is shown in a prayerful pose, with his hands raised in supplication, indicating his deep faith and trust in God's mercy. The medieval image reflects the deep-rooted belief in the power of prayer and the intercession of saints during times of crisis. The plague, which ravaged Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries, claimed millions of lives and instilled a deep sense of fear and despair. Saint Roch became a symbol of hope and healing, and his image was widely disseminated through art and religious iconography. Today, Saint Roch is still revered in the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of several cities and towns, including Montpellier, Marseille, and Venice. His feast day is celebrated on August 16th.
