EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving, Saint Odo of Cluny, the second abbot of the renowned Benedictine monastery of Cluny (879-942), is depicted in his ecclesiastical attire. The image, drawn and engraved by Leopold Massard for the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," provides a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the medieval period. Saint Odo is shown wearing a simple tunic, the undergarment of the time, which is tucked into a pair of loose-fitting trousers. Over his tunic, he wears a dalmatic cape, a liturgical garment traditionally worn during the celebration of Mass. The dalmatic is adorned with intricate geometric patterns and is fastened at the shoulders with brooches. The saint's head is covered by a sudarium, a square piece of fabric that was used to cover the head and shoulders during the Eucharistic celebration. The sudarium is draped over his shoulders and is held in place by a simple cord. The meticulous detail of the engraving allows us to appreciate the textures and materials used in medieval fashion. The folds of the garments are rendered with great care, and the intricate patterns on the dalmatic are reminiscent of the intricate designs found in surviving textiles from the period. Saint Odo of Cluny was a significant figure in the history of the Benedictine Order and the medieval Church. He is remembered for his reforms of the monastery of Cluny, which became a model for monastic life throughout Europe. This image serves as a reminder of the importance of the monastery and the role of monasticism in medieval society, as well as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the period.
