Abbess Anglia Anna Nuns Rocks Safety Tide

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, Saint Etheldreda, also known as Saint Ethelthryth or Aethelthryth, is depicted with two nuns as they make their way to the safety of the Ely marshes. The daughter of King Anna of East Anglia, Etheldreda was a remarkable figure in British history, renowned for her piety and devotion to the religious life. Born in the mid-7th century, Etheldreda was married against her will to King Egfrid of Northumbria. Despite her marital obligations, she remained steadfast in her commitment to God and, after her husband's death, sought refuge in the Ely marshes. It was there that she founded the monastery of Ely in 673, becoming its first abbess. The image captures the moment of her flight from her husband, as she and her companions make their way across the treacherous terrain of the marshes, with the tide lapping at the rocks in the background. Etheldreda, dressed in the robes of a queen and a nun, is shown with her head bowed in prayer, her eyes closed in deep concentration. Her two nuns, one on either side of her, provide support and protection as they make their way to the safety of the monastery. The scene is one of great drama and emotion, with the stark contrast between the rocky shoreline and the calm, still waters of the sea reflecting the inner turmoil and determination of the saint. Etheldreda's story is one of courage and faith, and her legacy as the founding abbess of Ely Abbey continues to inspire generations of Christians to this day.
