EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in history as Russian refugee children make their way down a ladder from the HMS Marlborough at Moda, in the Sea of Marmara, Istanbul, Turkey, in April 1919. The Russian aristocracy and members of the royal family, including the Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Anastasia, and Maria Nikolaevna, had escaped the turmoil of their homeland following the Bolshevik Revolution. The children, dressed in warm coats and hats, clutching baskets and toys, appear curious and excited as they descend the ladder to the quay, awaiting the next stage of their arduous journey. The HMS Marlborough, a British Royal Navy cruiser, had moored at Moda to take on supplies and allow the refugees to disembark for a brief respite before continuing their travels. The quayside bustles with activity as Turkish onlookers and soldiers watch the scene unfold, a testament to the global impact of the Russian Revolution and the plight of its displaced people.
