EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming Christmas greetings card, dated 1913, was sent by Charles Alexander Holcombe Longcroft, a pioneering aviator and future senior commander in the Royal Air Force. At the time, Longcroft was serving with the 2nd Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps, based in Montrose. The card bears his hand-written signature, adding a personal touch to this historical artifact. Longcroft's aviation career began in earnest in 1912 when he obtained his Royal Aero Club certificate. He requested to be attached to the Air Battalion of the Royal Engineers and, with the establishment of the Royal Flying Corps the following month, was seconded to the new Corps. Shortly after sending this card, Longcroft was promoted to major and appointed Officer Commanding No. 1 Squadron RFC. Over the next few years, he held several prominent positions within the RFC, including command of the Training Wing, 2nd Wing, V Brigade, and Training Division. Longcroft finished World War I as General Officer Commanding the 3rd Brigade. In 1919, Longcroft was awarded a permanent RAF commission in the rank of group captain. Just four days later, he was promoted to air commodore. He went on to become the first commandant of the world's first air academy, the RAF (Cadet) College at Cranwell. This card offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable man during an era of significant change and innovation in military aviation. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories behind the history of flight.
