EDITORS COMMENTS
In this black-and-white photograph, we find aviation pioneer Jock Eassie skillfully maneuvering a Short SA2 Sturgeon TT2, registration number VR363, as he air-tows an experimental SB1 Sherpa off the runway at Aldergrove on the momentous day of July 30, 1951. Jock Eassie, a renowned Scottish aviator, was a test pilot for Short Brothers, a British aircraft manufacturing company based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Eassie's expertise and daring abilities were instrumental in the development and testing of various aircraft models, including the Short SA2 Sturgeon and the SB1 Sherpa. The Short SA2 Sturgeon TT2, a versatile transport aircraft, was designed to provide short-haul services for passengers and cargo. Its distinctive twin-engine configuration and robust construction made it a popular choice for both civilian and military applications. The SB1 Sherpa, an experimental aircraft, was undergoing testing at Aldergrove Airport. Air towing was a common method used during the testing phase to evaluate the aircraft's performance and handling characteristics in flight. In this photograph, we see Eassie expertly guiding the Sturgeon as it tugs the Sherpa off the runway, marking another milestone in the development of these innovative aircraft. This evocative image captures the essence of aviation history, showcasing the courage, skill, and determination of pilots like Jock Eassie and the groundbreaking achievements of the Short Brothers company in the early 1950s.
