EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the momentous arrival of the first Thor missile at RAF Feltwell in Norfolk, England on 19 September 1958. The Thor missile, a major development in the field of nuclear weapons and strategic defense, was a single-stage, liquid-propelled ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead over intercontinental ranges. The Thor missile was transported to RAF Feltwell by a C-124 Globemaster II transport plane, as seen in the background of this image. The plane, with its distinctive hump-backed design and large cargo door, was a workhorse of the US military during the Cold War, often used to transport large and heavy equipment, including missiles, to various bases around the world. RAF Feltwell was chosen as the site for the Thor missile base due to its strategic location and the availability of the necessary infrastructure. The base was home to the 1st and 31st Missile Wings, each with 15 Thor missile squadrons, and remained in operation until 1963 when the missiles were decommissioned and the base was returned to the RAF for conventional aircraft use. This photograph is a testament to the technological advancements and military innovation of the late 1950s, as well as the critical role that RAF Feltwell played in the defense of the United Kingdom during the Cold War era.
