The Convair XP-81, also known as the "Model 112," was an American experimental transport aircraft developed by the Convair Aircraft Corporation during the late 1940s. This particular aircraft, registered as 44-91000, was the second prototype built and first flew on October 25, 1947. The Convair XP-81 was designed to meet the United States Army Air Forces' requirement for a high-speed, long-range transport aircraft. It was a twin-engine, twin-boom design with a unique canard configuration, which provided additional lift and stability during takeoff and landing. The aircraft was powered by two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-14 Double Wasp engines, capable of generating 2,000 horsepower each. The Convair XP-81 featured a spacious cabin with a capacity for 24 passengers or 12 stretchers and medical personnel. The aircraft was also equipped with a rear loading ramp and a large cargo door, allowing for easy loading and unloading of cargo. Unfortunately, the Convair XP-81 did not enter production due to the emergence of jet transport aircraft. However, its innovative design paved the way for future transport aircraft developments.
