EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Air Vice Marshal The Right Honourable Sir Frederick Hugh Sykes, GCSI, GCIE, GBE, KCB, CMG, in 1954, as he stands before a line of aircraft. Sir Frederick, born on July 23, 1877, was a distinguished figure in the history of the Royal Air Force (RAF). He began his military career in the British Army before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1912, just as aviation was beginning to take off as a military force. Throughout his illustrious career, Sir Frederick made significant contributions to the development of air transport and military aviation. He played a key role in the establishment of the RAF as an independent service in 1918 and went on to hold numerous high-ranking positions, including Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the RAF Transport Command during World War II. Sir Frederick was knighted several times for his services to the RAF and the British Empire. He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of India (GCSI), the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Indian Empire (GCIE), the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE), the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), and the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). As he stands before the planes in this photograph, Sir Frederick, who passed away on September 30, 1954, looks on with a sense of pride and accomplishment, having played a pivotal role in the evolution of military aviation. This image is a testament to his dedication and contributions to the RAF and the United Kingdom.
