EDITORS COMMENTS
Two Westland Wessex HU5 helicopters, XS491 and XS523, are seen parked on the flight deck of HMS Daedalus in Lee-on-Solent. The Wessex HU5 helicopters were a key component of the Royal Navy's helicopter fleet during the late 20th century, providing essential transport and support services for the fleet. XS491 and XS523 were both operated by 702 Naval Air Squadron, based at HMS Daedalus. The squadron was responsible for providing search and rescue, transport, and utility support to the Royal Navy and other military and civilian organizations. The Westland Wessex HU5 helicopter was a twin-engine, multi-role helicopter that could be used for a variety of tasks, including search and rescue, transport, and anti-submarine warfare. It was powered by two Rolls-Royce Gnome H1200 turboshaft engines, which gave it a top speed of around 140 mph and a range of over 500 miles. In this photograph, XS491 and XS523 are seen with their rotor blades folded, indicating that they are either undergoing maintenance or are ready for transport by road or sea. The flight deck of HMS Daedalus provides an ideal location for the helicopters to be based, allowing them to quickly and easily deploy for missions. The Westland Wessex HU5 helicopter served with the Royal Navy from the late 1960s until the early 2000s, when it was replaced by more modern helicopter types. Despite being retired from service, the Wessex remains a beloved icon of British military aviation history. This photograph captures a moment in time when two of these versatile and capable helicopters were still in service, ready to support the Royal Navy's operations from the deck of HMS Daedalus.
