EDITORS COMMENTS
Severo's Airship PAX, 12 May 1902: A Pioneering Leap into the Sky This image captures the moment of takeoff for Severo's airship PAX on 12 May 1902. The Italian inventor, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, stands proudly on the ground as his magnificent creation begins its ascent into the heavens. The airship, named PAX, was the third of Zeppelin's successful rigid airships, and it marked a significant milestone in the history of flight. The PAX was a marvel of engineering, measuring 48 meters long and capable of carrying up to 12 passengers and a crew of 15. Its distinctive shape, with a rigid, non-movable frame and a large, non-rigid envelope filled with hydrogen gas, allowed for unprecedented maneuverability and longer flight durations compared to earlier attempts at airship travel. The airship's launch on 12 May 1902, at Lake Constance in Germany, was a triumphant moment for Zeppelin and his team. The successful takeoff demonstrated the potential for airships as a viable means of transportation and opened the door to further advancements in the field of aeronautics. This photograph, taken from a distance, offers a unique perspective of the PAX as it lifts off the ground, leaving a trail of smoke in its wake. The image captures the excitement and wonder of this pioneering moment in aviation history, as the world looked to the skies with anticipation and curiosity.
