EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the prototype Focke Achgelis Fa223V1 Drache, or Dragon, with the registration number D-OCEB, in the year 1940. The Fa223V1 Drache was an innovative transport aircraft designed and developed by the German engineering firm Focke-Achgelis. This particular aircraft is an amphibian, capable of taking off and landing both on water and land, making it a versatile addition to the German military's arsenal during World War II. The Fa223V1 Drache was a large, twin-engine aircraft with a distinctive dragon-like appearance due to its elongated fuselage and pointed nose. Its wings were high-mounted and swept-back, while its tail was empennage-type. The aircraft was designed to carry up to 25 passengers or 3,000 kg (6,600 lb) of cargo. Despite its impressive design, the Fa223V1 Drache never entered mass production due to the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent diversion of resources towards military aircraft production. Only a few prototypes were built, including the one depicted in this photograph. This photograph captures the Fa223V1 Drache in its prime, standing proudly on the tarmac with its engines idling, ready for takeoff. The crew members in their flight suits can be seen preparing for the next test flight, while the surrounding landscape and other aircraft provide a sense of scale and context. Overall, this photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the history of aviation and the innovative designs that emerged during the early days of flight technology.
