EDITORS COMMENTS
Naval Airship No. 3, Astra Torres, gracefully moored on a mast on the shores of a tranquil lake, on the fateful day of June 12, 1913. This historic photograph captures a moment in aviation history, as the world's third rigid airship, designed and built by the Spanish engineer Enrique Sernas, comes to rest after a successful flight. The Astra Torres, a marvel of engineering and innovation, was the largest airship built in Spain at the time, measuring 55 meters in length and boasting a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters. The airship's sleek, streamlined hull and elegant design were a testament to Sernas' vision for the future of air travel. Powered by two Maybach engines, the Astra Torres could reach speeds of up to 48 kilometers per hour and had a range of over 1,000 kilometers. The airship's impressive capabilities were showcased in a series of demonstration flights, drawing crowds and captivating the public's imagination. In this photograph, the Astra Torres is seen moored on a mast, likely for repairs or maintenance, surrounded by a team of crew members and support personnel. The serene setting, with the reflection of the airship on the still water, adds to the sense of wonder and excitement that surrounded this pioneering aircraft. The Astra Torres would go on to make several more flights before meeting its unfortunate end in a tragic accident in 1914. Nevertheless, its legacy lives on as a symbol of Spain's contributions to the early days of aviation and a reminder of the boundless possibilities of human ingenuity.
