Balloon built at Versailles
A balloon built at Versailles, France, and put on display there on a platform. It was 60 feet high and 40 feet in diameter, in blue and gold material. A sheep was placed in the cage, and an ascent took place in front of the King and Royal Family. The balloon later descended in Paris, in the Carrefour Marechal, Bois de Vaucresson, near the Chemin aux Boeufs.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image portrays the historic moment when the first hot air balloon was built and displayed at the grand Palace of Versailles, France, on September 19, 1783. The balloon, standing 60 feet high and 40 feet in diameter, was a magnificent spectacle, adorned in blue and gold material. The royal family and distinguished guests gathered around the platform in anticipation, as a sheep was carefully placed inside the woven basket cage suspended beneath the balloon. The excitement reached a fever pitch as the fire was ignited, filling the balloon with hot air, causing it to ascend gracefully into the sky. The royal family, including the King, watched in awe as the balloon rose higher and higher, marking a significant milestone in human history – the first manned flight. The balloon's journey did not end at Versailles, however. It eventually descended in Paris, near the Carrefour Marechal in the Bois de Vaucresson, near the Chemin aux Boeufs. The successful transportation of the balloon from Versailles to Paris was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the pioneering aeronauts of the time. This photograph, taken from The Royal Aeronautical Society's National Aerospace Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to an era of discovery and wonder, when the skies above were a new frontier waiting to be explored.
