EDITORS COMMENTS
Balloon Ascent from St. Cloud, Paris: A Vintage Aeronautical Moment Captured in Time This photograph, titled "Balloon Ascent from St. Cloud, Paris," is a stunning relic of the early days of aviation history. Taken in the late 18th century, it depicts a hot air balloon in the midst of an ascent from the St. Cloud estate, located on the outskirts of Paris. The scene is further enriched by the picturesque setting of the St. Jacques-de-Mondaye Pond and the Château de Châteaux-Renault in the background. The two brothers, Robert and Montgolfier, are often credited with the invention of the hot air balloon. Their pioneering spirit and groundbreaking achievements in the realm of flight took place in June 1783, when they successfully launched the first untethered hot air balloon flight near Versailles. This photograph, however, is believed to date back to July 1784, during the second ascent of the Montgolfier brothers' balloon, the "Nuage," from St. Cloud. The photograph also features a number of distinguished spectators, including the Duke of Chartres, the Count of Duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, and the Monseigneur de Segur. The transportation of the balloon and its passengers was a significant event in the French society, attracting a large crowd of curious onlookers. The Montgolfier brothers' balloon ascended to an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, making it a remarkable achievement for the time. The photograph serves as a testament to the spirit of innovation and exploration that characterized the late 18th century. The image is part of the extensive collection of the Royal Aeronautical Society (National Aerospace Library) and is available through Mary Evans Prints Online. It offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the early days of aviation history and the thrill of human flight.
