Born in Cumming, Georgia, in 1800, Schenck rose to prominence as a soldier in the Mexican-American War, where he served under General Winfield Scott and was awarded the brevet rank of major for his bravery. Following his military career, Schenck turned to politics, representing the Whig Party in the Georgia State Senate from 1843 to 1845. In 1845, he was elected as a Whig to the 29th Congress, serving until 1849. Schenck's political career was marked by his strong stance on states' rights and his opposition to the expansion of slavery. During the Civil War, Schenck remained loyal to the Union and was appointed as a brigadier general in the Georgia Militia by President Abraham Lincoln. He led his troops in several engagements, including the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, where he was wounded. After the war, Schenck continued his political career, serving in the Georgia State Senate once again from 1868 to 1871. This photograph, taken in 1875, captures Schenck in the later years of his life.
