EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Venerable Rikusho-no-Matsu Boat-shaped Pine Tree at Kinkakuji Temple, Kyoto, Japan 2. Description: This photograph showcases the ancient Rikusho-no-Matsu pine tree, a 600-year-old wonder, meticulously shaped into the form of a sailing boat. This remarkable bonsai tree, a testament to Japanese horticultural artistry, was once transported by the Ashikaga Shogun Yoshimitsu to Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Temple of the Golden Pavilion or Rokuonji Temple. Located in Kyoto, Japan, this Zen Buddhist temple, which belongs to the Shokokuji Temple branch of the Rinzai sect, is renowned for its striking golden pavilion that mirrors the tranquil waters of the adjacent lake. The Rikusho-no-Matsu, facing west, adds an enchanting element to the temple grounds. Legend has it that the westward orientation of the boat-shaped pine tree allowed people to ride it to the Western Pure Land – a symbolic representation of the spiritual journey towards enlightenment. The tree's age and unique shape have made it a cherished icon of Japanese culture and a must-see attraction for visitors to Kinkakuji Temple. The photograph, taken circa 1908, captures the essence of this historical and spiritual landmark, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan.
