1891 1948 Austrian Opera Singer Tauber Tenor 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
Richard Tauber: The Austrian Tenor who Captivated Operatic Audiences in the 1920s and 1930s This evocative photograph captures the elegant and charismatic Austrian tenor, Richard Tauber, in the prime of his career during the late 1920s. Born in Vienna on March 12, 1891, Tauber's exceptional vocal abilities and captivating stage presence quickly propelled him to international fame. Tauber's operatic debut took place in 1913 at the Volksoper in Vienna, where he sang the role of Alfredo in La Traviata. However, it was his performance as Rodolfo in La Bohème at the Covent Garden Opera House in London in 1921 that truly launched his international career. Tauber's unique voice, described as "velvety and mellow," combined with his innate acting ability, made him a favorite among audiences and critics alike. Throughout his career, Tauber graced the stages of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, and the Paris Opera. He also enjoyed a successful career in popular music, recording numerous hit songs and appearing in films. Despite the challenges of the political climate in Europe during the 1930s, Tauber continued to perform, even making appearances in Nazi Germany. However, his anti-Nazi sentiments and support for the Allied forces during World War II ultimately led to his exile from Europe. Tauber spent the final years of his life in the United States, where he continued to perform until his untimely death on February 6, 1948. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the extraordinary talent and enduring legacy of Richard Tauber, an Austrian tenor who captivated operatic audiences around the world for decades.
