EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 19th century print depicts the English Royalist poet, Richard Lovelace, deep in thought as he pens the lines of his most famous poem, "To Althea, From Prison," in the cramped and dimly lit confines of Gatehouse Prison, adjoining Westminster Abbey. Born in 1617, Lovelace was a passionate supporter of the English monarchy and a prolific writer, whose works reflected his deep love for his country and his faith in the divine right of kings. In 1642, as the political tides began to turn against the monarchy with the passage of the Clergy Act 1640, which stripped the bishops of their seats in Parliament, Lovelace found himself imprisoned in Gatehouse Prison for his outspoken loyalty to King Charles I. It was during this time that he penned "To Althea, From Prison," a heartfelt plea for the annulment of the Clergy Act and a poignant expression of his unwavering devotion to his beloved. Despite the harsh conditions of his confinement, Lovelace's spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to write, finding solace and inspiration in the words that flowed from his pen. This print captures the essence of his resilience and the depth of his passion, as he imagines a future free from the shackles of imprisonment and the political turmoil that had engulfed his country.
