EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Victorian Reformatory School: Kerrison Approved School, Thorndon, Suffolk, 1920s" This evocative photograph captures the somber atmosphere of the Kerrison Approved School for Boys in Thorndon, Suffolk, during the 1920s. Originally established in 1856 as a Reformatory School, it was later known as the Kerrison Reformatory, after one of its initiators, Sir Edward C. Kerrison. The institution was designed to house juvenile offenders aged under 16 for a period of 2 to 5 years. The image transports us back to an era when the criminal justice system focused on the reformation of young offenders rather than punishment. The boys, dressed in uniforms, can be seen lined up outside the imposing Victorian building, their expressions revealing a mix of apprehension and defiance. The school's architecture, with its high walls and barred windows, underscores the sense of confinement and discipline. The Kerrison Approved School was part of a larger movement to address the issue of juvenile crime in the 19th century. Reformatories like this one aimed to provide education, training, and moral guidance to young offenders, with the hope that they would be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society upon release. As we gaze at this photograph, we are reminded of the complex history of the juvenile justice system and the evolving attitudes towards crime and punishment. The Kerrison Approved School at Thorndon stands as a testament to the efforts made to reform young offenders during the Victorian era and beyond. This photograph is a valuable historical record, offering a glimpse into a bygone era and shedding light on the experiences of young people who found themselves in the criminal justice system during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
