EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of London's Trafalgar Square during the winter of 1915, the spirit of heroism and patriotism was palpable as the country geared up for the ongoing battle against Germany in World War I. Among the crowds, Lance-Corporal Edward Dwyer VC, affectionately known as the "Little Corporal," stood proudly on the shoulders of his comrades from the East Surrey Regiment. Dwyer, born in 1896, had earned his Victoria Cross (VC) for his extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Hill 60 on April 20, 1915. He single-handedly repelled a German attack on his trench by standing on the parapet and hurling hand grenades, saving countless lives. Tragically, Dwyer's heroism would not go unrewarded for long. He was killed in action on the Somme on September 3, 1916. This powerful image captures the essence of the recruiting drives that took place across the United Kingdom during the war, as men like Dwyer were celebrated and feted as symbols of courage and determination. The East Surrey Regiment's pride in their fallen hero was evident as they lifted him high for all to see, paying tribute to a true British hero.
