EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of resilience and community during wartime as members of the Buckingham Palace household and wives of employees of the Royal Mews gather for Queen Elizabeth's Sewing Bee in 1939. Held twice a week in the magnificent Blue Drawing Room, this initiative was part of the wider war effort to produce essential garments and surgical dressings for the Red Cross. The women, seated at trestle tables, are engrossed in their needlework, their faces reflecting a sense of purpose and determination. The Blue Drawing Room, originally Queen Victoria's ballroom, provides a stunning backdrop to this wartime scene, highlighting the contrast between the grandeur of the State apartments and the practicality of the sewing bee. This poignant image offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the women who supported the royal family and the war effort from the comfort of their own residence.
