EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 47: Pterocnemia pennata, the Lesser Rhea, from Charles Robert Darwin's Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle, Part 3 Birds (1838-41), is a stunning hand-coloured lithograph by the renowned team of John and Elizabeth Gould. This exquisite illustration showcases the distinctive features of this flightless bird, native to South America. John Gould's expert anatomy depiction highlights the bald, curved head and neck of the Lesser Rhea, with its mottled, long body and long, powerful legs. The intricate details of the feathers on its back and wings are beautifully captured in Elizabeth Gould's hand-colouring, adding depth and texture to the image. The Lesser Rhea, also known as the Darwin's Rhea, is a member of the avian family Rheidae. This bird is flightless and is found in the grasslands and wetlands of South America. The image is a testament to the meticulous work of the Goulds, who were instrumental in documenting the natural history of the species during the voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle, under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. Charles Darwin, the famous naturalist, was on board the Beagle during this voyage and made extensive notes on the various species he encountered. The Zoology of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle was a collaborative effort between Darwin and the Goulds, with the latter producing the illustrations based on Darwin's observations and descriptions. This lithograph is a remarkable piece of 19th-century scientific documentation, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring the Lesser Rhea to life, transporting us back in time to the era of exploration and discovery.
