EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and discipline of a Private in full marching order from E Company of the 106th Provisional Battalion. The image, taken in the early 20th century during the height of the First World War, portrays the soldier with a focused expression as he marches towards the chalk pits in the distance. The battalion, part of the larger 20th Battalion of the County of London Regiment, was known for its courage and resilience on the battlefield. The soldier in the photograph has been identified as 21017 Private P.J. Hill. Prior to his military service, Hill studied at the prestigious Lambeth School of Art, located at St. Oswalds Place, Upper Kennington Lane in London. After completing his education, he resided at 6 Amott Road in Peckham Rye. The juxtaposition of the soldier's artistic background and his military duty adds an intriguing layer to this historical image. The 106th Provisional Battalion was formed in 1914 as part of the rapid expansion of the British Army during the First World War. The battalion saw action on the Western Front and in Egypt, and was disbanded in 1919. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers who served in this important regiment, and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Great War.
