Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein, art exhibition

Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein (1870 - 1948), daughter of Princess Helena & Prince Christian, grandaughter of Queen Victoria. Known, rather cruelly, as " Snipe" in her younger days among the family on account of her long nose and face. She never married but was a popular member of the royal family. Pictured opening the Royal Amateur Art Exhibition at Surrey House, Marble Arch in March 1912. Also present, left to right, is Sir William Richmond, the Duchess of Buckingham (at back), Princess Victoria and Mrs Ross an octogenarian competitor who was highly commended for her picture.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein, affectionately known as "Snipe" due to her long nose and face, graces the occasion of the Royal Amateur Art Exhibition at Surrey House in Marble Arch, London, in March 1912. Surrounded by the artistic community, the princess is seen opening the exhibition with a sense of pride and enthusiasm. To her left stands Sir William Richmond, a renowned British painter and the president of the Royal Society of British Artists, who oversaw the event. The Duchess of Buckingham, with an elegant backdrop, looks on approvingly. Princess Victoria, dressed in an elegant gown and adorned with a grand hat, exudes a regal and sophisticated air. Beside the princess, an octogenarian competitor, Mrs. Ross, is highlighted with commendation. Her picture, a testament to her lifelong passion for art, is a source of inspiration for the young and old alike. The exhibition, which showcased the works of amateur artists, was an annual event that brought together the royal family and the artistic community, fostering a shared appreciation for the arts. Princess Victoria, who never married, was a beloved member of the royal family and a dedicated patron of the arts. Her presence at the exhibition added an air of elegance and grace, making it a memorable event for all involved. This photograph, a snapshot of history, captures the essence of the occasion and the spirit of the people who made it possible.
