The Llywelyn Monument at Cilmeri near Builth Wells - memorial to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd or Llywelyn Ein Llyw Olaf (" Llywelyn, Our Last Leader" ) ), sometimes rendered as Llywelyn II - the last Prince of an Independent Wales before its conquest by Edward I of England. The original memorial erected by Squire Blyth in 1902 (as depicted on this card), was dismantled and incorporated in the steps leading the monument site, and a large monolith erected in its place in 1956. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Llywelyn Monument at Cilmeri near Builth Wells stands as a poignant reminder of the last Prince of an Independent Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, also known as Llywelyn Ein Llyw Olaf or Llywelyn II. The monument, located in the picturesque town of Builth Wells, commemorates the Welsh leader who ruled from 1256 until his tragic death in 1282 during the Battle of Cilmeri. The image captures the original memorial, which was erected by Squire Blyth in 1902, with its intricate design and inscription. However, this monument was later dismantled, and its stones were used to construct the steps leading to the current monument. In 1956, a large monolith was erected to replace the original memorial, standing tall and proud as a symbol of Welsh history and heritage. Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last Prince of an Independent Wales before its conquest by Edward I of England, is remembered as a courageous and determined leader who fought valiantly to preserve his people's freedom. This photograph, taken circa 1910, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of Welsh history that continues to captivate and inspire.
