In this historic photograph, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg (1844-1900) is seen with his new bride, Princess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (1847-1880), taken in May 1874, shortly after their marriage at St. Petersburg on 23rd January 1874. Maria was the only daughter of Tsar Alexander II and his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna. The Crimean War (1853-1856) had strained relations between the British and Russian monarchies, and Queen Victoria (1819-1901) harbored a firm dislike of the Russians. When Maria was suggested by Princess Alice, Princess Royal and Alfred's late sister, as a bride for Alfred, Victoria agreed half-heartedly and did not attend the wedding. Alfred and Maria went on to have four daughters, including Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938), and one son, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1874-1954). Seated in the photograph is Tsar Alexander II, with his fourth son, Alexei Alexandrovich (1850-1879). The image captures a significant moment in European royal history, as the two royal families came together in marriage despite the political tensions of the time. This photograph is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the lives of these royal figures and the complexities of international diplomacy in the late 19th century.
