This evocative image captures Pope Pius VII, born Luigi Barnabo Chiaramonti, in the later years of his pontificate. Signed into power in 1800, Pius VII was the first Pope of the 19th century and is best known for his controversial relationship with Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1801, Pius VII signed the Concordat of Paris, an agreement that recognized the temporal power of the Pope and granted the Catholic Church various concessions in France. However, the alliance between the Pope and Napoleon would not last. As Napoleon's power grew, he began to interfere in the appointment of bishops and the administration of the Church in France. In 1809, Napoleon forced Pius VII to crown him Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in a grand ceremony in Milan. This act of submission infuriated the Pope, who saw it as a violation of his spiritual authority. In 1812, Pius VII refused to grant Napoleon a divorce, which further strained their relationship. In response, Napoleon had the Pope arrested and imprisoned in the Fort of Fontainebleau. Pius VII remained a prisoner for over two years, during which time he wrote numerous letters and appeals for his release. Despite the hardships, Pius VII's faith remained unwavering. He continued to exercise spiritual leadership and even managed to consecrate a new bishop while in prison. The Pope was eventually released in 1814, following Napoleon's defeat in the War of the Sixth Coalition.
