1502 1572 1585 Catholicism Gregorius Pope Xiii
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Pope Gregory XIII (Ugo Boncompagni) is depicted in regal attire, signifying his position as the spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church from 1572 until his death in 1585. Born on February 2, 1502, in Sant'Angelo in Vado, Italy, Gregory XIII began his ecclesiastical career as a canon regular of the Order of Sant'Agostino. He was later appointed as a cardinal in 1551 by Pope Julius III. Gregory XIII's papacy is most notably remembered for the introduction of the Gregorian calendar, which replaced the Julian calendar. The new calendar, implemented on October 4, 1582, corrected the error in the Julian calendar that caused the solar year to be 11 minutes longer than a tropical year. This correction was essential to ensure the accuracy of religious observances, particularly the celebration of Easter. During his papacy, Gregory XIII also focused on the propagation of the faith, supporting missionary efforts in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. He established the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, which is still active today and is responsible for the spread of the Catholic faith throughout the world. Gregory XIII is also known for his patronage of the arts and sciences. He invited Galileo Galilei to the Vatican to discuss his astronomical discoveries, although it would be several years before the Church fully embraced Galileo's heliocentric model of the universe. This portrait, created during Gregory XIII's papacy, captures the pope's wisdom, authority, and dedication to the Catholic faith. His legacy continues to shape the religious and scientific landscape, making him an enduring figure in the history of the Catholic Church.
