EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph and cross-section drawing, taken from the pages of Illustrated London News in 1939, depict the German raider, the pocket battleship Deutschland. By this time, the Deutschland and her sister ships, the Lützow and the Admiral Scheer, had become notorious for their marauding activities in the Atlantic during the early stages of World War II. The Deutschland, commissioned in 1936, was a formidable vessel, displacing 12,200 tons and armed with a main battery of eight 11-inch guns. Its sleek design and high speed made it a formidable adversary, able to outmaneuver many Allied warships. The raider's success in sinking merchant vessels and evading detection made it a significant threat to Allied shipping lines and morale. The photograph above captures the Deutschland as a hunted prize, its menacing presence evident in the ominous clouds that gather around it. The cross-section drawing below provides a detailed view of the ship's interior, revealing its complex machinery and weaponry. Together, these images offer a glimpse into the technological prowess and military strategy of the German Navy during the early years of the war. As the world watched with bated breath, the hunt for the Deutschland and her sister ships became a symbol of the larger conflict, with the Allies ultimately successful in tracking down and sinking them. Today, these images serve as a reminder of the strategic importance of naval power during wartime and the enduring allure of the sea as a battleground.
