EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 344 from The Gleanings of Natural History, vol. 3, published in 1764 by George Edwards, showcases two exquisitely detailed and captivatingly illustrated birds: the White-faced Mannaquin (Manacus cassini) and the Ruby-crested Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris). This hand-colored copperplate etching, annotated in the bottom left corner, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 18th century. The White-faced Mannaquin, a small brown bird with a distinctive white face, is perched on a rock, its long, slender beak pointed towards the ground as if in search of food. The intricate details of its feathers, from the subtle variations in color to the almost imperceptible veins, are beautifully rendered in the engraving. The mannaquin's anatomy is also depicted with remarkable accuracy, from the structure of its legs and feet to the contours of its body. Perched beside the mannaquin is the Ruby-crested Hummingbird, its vibrant red crest and iridescent green and black plumage a stark contrast to the mannaquin's muted tones. The hummingbird is in flight, its wings extended in a graceful arc, the delicate feathers of its wings and tail intricately detailed. The artist has captured the essence of the hummingbird's unique ability to hover in mid-air, its breath visible in the form of tiny white puffs. This stunning illustration, a testament to the skill and artistry of George Edwards and his team, invites us to appreciate the beauty and diversity of the natural world, transporting us back in time to an era when the wonders of nature were a source of endless fascination and inspiration.
