Francisco Pizarro, the dapper Spanish conquistador who boldly led his men to the conquest of the Inca Empire in Peru, is depicted in this 19th century print. Born around 1475 in Trujillo, Spain, Pizarro embarked on a journey to the New World in search of wealth and adventure. He first arrived in the Americas in 1502, and over the next several decades, he gained a reputation as a skilled military leader and an astute strategist. In 1532, Pizarro and a small band of men, including his loyal companions Diego de Almagro and Hernando Piso, set out to explore the lands of the Inca Empire. With the help of a local guide named Esteban, they encountered the Inca ruler Atahualpa in the city of Cajamarca. After a cunning ruse, Pizarro and his men were able to capture Atahualpa, and the Inca leader was later executed. Pizarro went on to establish the city of Lima as the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, and he ruled as its first governor. However, his rule was not without controversy. He faced numerous challenges from rival conquistadors, and his harsh treatment of the indigenous population led to widespread unrest. Despite these challenges, Pizarro remains a significant figure in the history of the Americas. His conquest of the Inca Empire opened up a new world of opportunities for Spanish exploration and colonization, and it marked the beginning of the end of the Inca civilization.
