Born around 1475 in Trujillo, Spain, Pizarro embarked on a journey to the New World in search of wealth and adventure. He first arrived in the Caribbean in 1502, and later set his sights on the Inca Empire in South America. With a small band of men, Pizarro and his companions embarked on a daring expedition in 1532, which culminated in the conquest of the Inca capital, Cuzco, in 1533. The Incas, who had built a vast and sophisticated civilization, were no match for the Europeans' superior weaponry and tactics. Pizarro's conquest marked the beginning of Spanish rule in Peru and the exploitation of its rich natural resources. Despite his military achievements, Pizarro's rule was marked by controversy and violence. He was accused of cruelty and greed, and faced numerous rebellions and uprisings. In 1541, Pizarro was assassinated in Lima by a group of conspirators, bringing an end to his tumultuous reign.
