EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning image is Plate 416 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America," featuring four avian species: the Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus), the Black-and-white Woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis), the Pileated Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus), and the Flicker (Colaptes melanoleucus). The plate, which measures approximately 39 x 29 inches, is an original double elephant folio print, hand-coloured aquatint, engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell & Son in London between 1835 and 1838. The Hairy Woodpecker, with its distinctive chestnut-colored back and white underparts, is shown perched on a branch, its long bill poised for feeding. The Black-and-white Woodpecker, with its black and white plumage and distinctive red crest, is also shown perched, its bill delicately pecking at a flowering angiosperm, likely a member of the Fagaceae family, such as a beech or oak tree. The Pileated Woodpecker, the largest of the North American woodpeckers, is depicted with its crest raised, as it pecks at the bark of a tree, while the Flicker, with its brown and black barred plumage, is shown in flight, its long, flicking tail feathers creating a distinctive wake. The intricately detailed engraving and vibrant hand-colouring bring these birds to life, showcasing their unique features and natural habitats. The woodpeckers are members of the Picidae family, order Piciformes, and are part of the Eudicotyledons, or Eudicots, a large group of flowering plants that includes the majority of angiosperms, or flowering plants. The woodpeckers' diets consist primarily of insects, which they locate by tapping on trees and listening for the sound of their prey's movements. The woodpeckers' bills are adapted for excavating bark and extracting insects from tree crevices, making them essential members of their ecosystems.
