EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time at the Phoenix Club, Oxford University, in 1909. Among the distinguished young men gathered in the image is Denys Finch Hatton, the Honourable member seated second from right in the front row. Finch Hatton would later become renowned for his adventures in Africa as a big game hunter and the romantic interest in Karen Blixen's memoir, "Out of Africa." At the time of this photograph, however, Finch Hatton was a student at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was an active member of the prestigious Phoenix Club. Known for its golfing prowess, the Phoenix Club was a popular social and athletic organization for students. Finch Hatton's golfing skills would no doubt have contributed to his standing within the club. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the youthful faces of men who would go on to make their mark on history. Finch Hatton's story is particularly intriguing, as it intertwines with the legendary Karen Blixen, whose writings brought the enchanting world of colonial Africa to life. This photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history and traditions of Oxford University and the fascinating lives of its alumni.
