EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippe VI De Valois, King of France (1293-1350), is depicted in this historic print, which marks a pivotal moment in European history. Philippe's claim to the French throne was disputed when Marie de Luxembourg, the widow of Charles IV, gave birth to a daughter, Jeanne, in 1344. Philippe's election as king in 1328, following the death of Charles IV, had already been controversial due to the presence of a living heir. Edward III of England, who claimed descent from Philip the Fair through his mother, Isabella of France, disputed Philippe's right to the throne, leading to the outbreak of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). The conflict between Philippe VI and Edward III was not only about the French crown but also about the dominance of the French and English monarchies in Europe. The war lasted for over a century, with various phases, including the Battle of Crécy (1346) and the Battle of Agincourt (1415), which significantly impacted the balance of power in Europe. Philippe VI was a capable and experienced military leader, who had served as regent of France during the minority of his son, Jean II. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences, supporting scholars and artists, including Jean Froissart, the famous chronicler. Despite the challenges of the Hundred Years War, Philippe managed to strengthen the French monarchy and expand its territories, leaving a lasting legacy. This historic print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the complex political landscape of medieval Europe and the enduring conflict between the French and English monarchies. The image of Philippe VI De Valois, with his regal attire and stern expression, underscores the significance of his reign and the impact of the Hundred Years War on European history.
