EDITORS COMMENTS

This evocative image captures Philippa of Hainault, the enchanting queen consort of King Edward III of England, in the prime of her youth. Born in 1315 in Hainault, modern-day Belgium, Philippa was the eldest daughter of Count Guy of Flanders and Countess Isabella of Avesnes. Her marriage to Edward III in 1328, arranged to strengthen diplomatic ties between England and Flanders, marked the beginning of a remarkable reign. Philippa's influence on English culture and history is indelible. She is remembered for her intelligence, charm, and devotion to her husband and their children. During her time in Oxford, she founded the Lady Chapel in the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, which is still a cherished part of Queens' College. The college, officially named 'Regius College' but popularly known as 'Queens' College,' was established in 1341, making it one of the oldest colleges in the University of Oxford. Philippa's legacy extends beyond Oxford. She was a patron of the arts, supporting the development of illuminated manuscripts and the establishment of the Chantry of St. Mary at Westminster Abbey. Her influence on her husband's reign was significant, and she is believed to have played a role in the signing of the Ordinances of 1348, which limited the power of the king's favorites and strengthened the influence of the nobility. Philippa's life was not without tragedy. She lost her husband in 1377 and her eldest son, Edward, the Black Prince, in 1376. Despite these losses, she continued to serve as regent for her younger son, Richard II, until his majority in 1385. Philippa of Hainault passed away in 1369, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire and captivate historians and scholars to this day.
